Resting place for Oregon's political elite to celebrate 100th birthday - Statesman Journal

The Historic Mount Crest Abbey Mausoleum at City View Cemetery will celebrate its 100th anniversary with an open house this Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The celebration will coincide with the 34th annual Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery on Monday. The public is invited to learn about Salem's history in walking tours that will allow guests to read narratives of 44 individuals interred at the mausoleum, including governors, congressmen, mayors and business owners, over the weekend starting Saturday, May 24, at 9 a.m. The mausoleum is at 390 Hoyt St. S. "They can go to the niche or crypt where there is a short narrative to learn about their contribution," said City View owner and manager Rick Hilts. "These are the names we picked out and ones we knew we could get some type of narrative about what they did." For example, Charles Sprague, 22nd Governor of Oregon and publisher of the former Oregon Statesman, has a place in the mausoleum alongside his wife. Oregon 14th Governor Oswald West, whose term oversaw women's suffrage and prohibition coming into affect, now also rests at Mount Crest Abbey. A mausoleum, which features crypts for entombment and niches for cremains, is an alternative to below-ground burial. Hilts has organized a collection of pictures, newspaper clippings and other historic memorabili...

Salem's past on view at mausoleum walking tour - Statesman Journal

Sprague High School. Oswald West State Park. The names are familiar to any Salemite. But what's the story behind them? This weekend, Mount Crest Abbey Mausoleum is inviting the public in to find out. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the mausoleum, at City View Cemetery, has put together a walking tour of its famous residents. And there are lots of them. Since only the prominent and wealthy paid to be interred in its marble halls in past decades, a good percentage of the 5,000 or so names on the walls are well-known. Now, however, the cost is about the same as a burial, owner Rick Hilts said. It was Hilts' daughter, Ellyn, who did weeks of research to put the tour together. The 20-year-old scoured the internet and dug through microfilm to find out the stories behind the names. The tour includes governors, congressmen, mayors and business owners. It also includes newspaper pages from dates significant to the mausoleum, including one from the day it opened in 1914. And there are a few slightly creepy extras, such as the original crematorium hidden behind a panel in the chapel, and the old vaults tucked away in a musty b...
